In the field: SCMS credential automation

SCMS was one of our projects that helped solve a surprisingly manual process: creating resort guest access cards.

Before automation, each card required information to be collected from multiple systems, manually entered into the access control software, then individually created and encoded. A single reservation with twelve guests could mean repeating the same process twelve times.

The challenge was not that the systems were incapable. The problem was that the workflow depended on people acting as the connection between them.

SCMS connected the reservation data, access control system, and card creation workflow together. Cards could now be created, printed, and encoded in bulk instead of one at a time. The result was a process that went from roughly six minutes for twelve cards to about thirty seconds, while eliminating around 90% of the manual data entry.

When integration starts becoming custom software

Sometimes the gaps between systems are small and a focused integration is enough. Sometimes the gaps are large enough that the “integration” starts to own business logic, workflow, and decisions.

At that point you’re no longer just connecting systems, you’re building a system that happens to talk to others. That’s the boundary where pure integration work turns into custom software.

Recognizing that boundary early is valuable. It prevents over-complicated point-to-point connections and keeps the overall architecture honest.

Integrations and custom software are points on the same spectrum, not separate categories.

Teams that only do integrations tend to stretch point-to-point connections further than they should. Teams that only build custom software sometimes reinvent pieces that already exist in other systems.
